Tobacco consumption pattern in different professions, Bandar Abbas, Iran

Abstract:

Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of mortality in the 21st century. Tobacco consumption control in one of the main efforts among all preventable risk factors of cardiovascular diseases. Consumption rate estimation of tobacco and opioid products in different strata of society for interventional education programs is very important. This study is aimed to investigate the consumption rate of tobacco and opioid products in different professions of Bandar Abbas residents. Methods: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, 2114 truck, trailer and bus drivers, 700 fishermen, 612 farmers, 502 university students and 500 male government employees, were selected using simple random sampling technique. Questionnaires of demographic data and tobacco products consumption habits were filled for every individual in their presence. SPSS 14 software, t-test and Chi-square tests were used for data analysis. Results: The results revealed that 72.6% of the drivers, 44% of the fishermen, 18.8% of government employees, 28.7% of the farmers and 42.4% of the university students are daily consumers of one of the tobacco products such as cigarette, hookah or pipe. The mean number of cigarette per day for drivers was 14 and the mean time of using hookah for them was 1.2 daily. Conclusion: It seems that interventional education programs for excelling knowledge of different strata of society is of great significance.
